What our federal school data does—and does not—cover

This report measures completeness after joining the current directory to enrollment, staffing, geography, and civil-rights files. It is generated from the same validated records as the school profiles, so gaps are visible rather than hidden.

Dataset build accessed August 18, 2026 · report updated September 30, 2026

Coverage across 98,950 schools

The directory spans 19,249 agencies. Most current schools match the major measurement files, but source timing and reporting scope leave important gaps. In particular, civil-rights program and support-staff fields come from an older collection than the directory.

1,314 schools (1.3%) currently have directory identity and location but none of the measured enrollment, staffing, demographic, program, or support fields. Their profiles are retained as directory records and clearly labeled; missing values are never converted to zero.

Enrollment and program coverage by state

Enrollment coverage and CRDC program coverage can differ because the files have different years and scopes. A lower percentage is a warning about comparability, not a statement about a state’s schools.

How to use a completeness report

Coverage helps explain why one profile may contain a full benchmark and another may show only current directory details. It should also limit the claims made from a ranking: a table can only describe the records that report its selected measure.

“Not reported” is not evidence that a program or staff role does not exist. For time-sensitive decisions, follow the official school or district link on the profile and ask for current information.

For join rules, formulas, eligibility thresholds, and source links, read the full methodology.
